Wearing your bra out is high fashion now. From inside the sex industry, the look is already familiar.
T
he bra top has been making headlines since models took to the runways at London and Paris Fashion Week over the last month and now, we’re all asking if our sports bras are appropriate to wear to a dinner date. Even Marks and Spencer is stocking its shelves with silicone stick-on nipples and honestly? I’m here for it. But if you ask a sex worker’s opinion, the fashion world is just catching up.
What fashion designers are calling cutting-edge, sex workers have been using to garner men’s attention since the word slut first got its definition. Swap out the lace and leather for cashmere and silk and suddenly, barely covering your nipples isn’t taboo, it’s high fashion.
The gates of the sex industry are tightly shut and carefully guarded by layers of shame and humiliation. We enter as moms, students and professionals and leave as such. But who we become in between is a sight to behold. Our runways might be covered in mysterious liquids and shrouded in clouds of cigarette smoke, but when you manage to break through the haze, you’ll see a modern version of Aphrodite. Her curves sculpted by a surgeon’s scalpel, her sheer bra barely holding back her underboob, balanced by the elegance of a thigh-high slit accentuating her expensive hips. When we aren’t draped in blankets to keep away a chilly draft, you’ll see us sporting satin chemises, leather bodysuits, fishnets and denim, plaid minis and a fur coat draped over suspenders and nothing else underneath.
What sex workers have long been crafting for the male gaze, high-fashion designers are now adopting to liberate the female form and set street trends.
The bra top is quintessential in our game. Sex workers’ fashion sense has always been innovatively ahead of the curve, but our iconic outfits stay hidden behind obscure buzzers and smoky walls.
The truth is, high-fashion runways aren’t doing anything new, they’re just rebranding what a whore looks like.
