The Sauna Social Scene: Why Saunas Are Becoming the New Third Space

The wellness world is getting hot, these are the best sauna experiences redefining wellness culture in the UK.

By Holly Courtney

A
subculture of the wellness world has emerged and it’s getting hot, as saunas are having their moment. However, unlike the wellness trends that have done the rounds, this one is nothing new. Flash back to 3rd Century BC and the Romans were using saunas as part of their communal bathing rituals, saunas have been woven into Scandinavian cultures for generations, and the indigenous communities of Mexico and North America have long practised similar heat-based traditions through ceremonial structures, that can be aptly translated in today’s world as “sweat lodges”.

So, why are we suddenly pressing pause on our fitness memberships and opting for the heat instead? Well, whilst the virtues of oscillating between intense heat and freezing cold have been well documented, today's sauna revival is about far more than recovery alone. From floating saunas to inner city sanctums, we've rounded up some of the most exciting concepts on offer right now, proving there's more to wellness than just another session at the gym.

Best Social Sauna in London for Music Lovers – Sauna Social Club

If you’re one for an off-beat music venue or like your free time with a bit of low-key ambience, then this one is for you. Sauna Social Club badges itself as an “Sauna and Listening Lounge” located in Peckham. The founders Nikki and Benji have combined their experience as a DJ & Social Worker, and Personal Trainer & Community Facilitator respectively, and created a beautiful hybrid sauna/ listening space with live DJs and art installations. Their offering reimagines the social ritual of drinks at the pub, and instead offers a relaxed, wellness focused alternative.

Best Sauna for a Weekly Wellness Routine – Sauna and Plunge

Sauna and Plunge is the ultimate place for those who want to build saunas into their daily rituals. Based in Shoreditch, the space offers a holistic approach, blending traditional Finnish and infrared saunas, cold plunges, movement classes and a chic café. We love their concept of consistency combined with sharp simplicity, as Joe Worthington, MD of Sauna and Plunge, says, "We're not a spa. A spa is a once-a-year escape. We're thirty-minute slots built into your week, six people at a time, sauna and plunge and a coffee, then back out into London sharper than you came in. Wellness that fits your life instead of interrupting it."

London's Floating Sauna Experience – Saunos

Sometimes the wildest concepts are the best, and Saunos is no exception. This is London’s first commercial sauna boat, based at Packington Bridge, N1. Offering a Scandi inspired sauna and cold plunge, we reckon this one would also be a great date idea. Inside the barge is a fully kitted out wellness experience: think sleek lines and a calm interior, which provides the perfect dichotomy to the view, with the undulation of the canal and hubbub of the city outside.

The Best Countryside Sauna Near London – Wild Sauna

Sometimes the best antidote to the frenzied pace of London life is a change of scenery. So what better excuse than to book a trip to a relaxing sauna overlooking green fields in the Great British countryside? A little over an hour on the train from London is Wild Sauna in Hampshire’s Candover Valley. They have plenty of experiences on offer, from facial workshops to Nordic Walks. Want to make a day of it? Wild sauna offers half day retreats and is also conveniently located next to the Yard, which offers delicious food at its café for some post sauna nourishment.

Wellness trends come and go, but the return of the sauna feels like its here to stay. Less about chasing the next health hack, and more about creating spaces where people can pause, connect and take a break from the pace of modern life.
