eople are recently embracing a new wellness craze known as “low cortisol maxxing” on social media, a micro-growing trend that encourages people to optimise their lifestyles by reducing stress through romantic relationships, going on a holiday, slow mornings, and taking days off. The trend has been increasingly gaining traction across Instagram and TikTok in recent months, as young men and women are increasingly framing cortisol levels as a marker of health and emotional control.
According to the trend-tracking platform Rising Trends, interest in “maxxing” culture has surged 5.2 times year-over-year, reflecting how self-care trends are rapidly expanding into improving mental fitness and promoting wellness content.
The ‘maxxing’ culture originally emerged from the ‘looksmaxxing’ trend on Instagram and TikTok. The viral term attaches “scores” to aspects of male appearance, focusing particularly on jawline, muscularity and skin.
Looksmaxxers improve their appearance through “softmaxxing” methods such as using a gua sha, maintaining a calorie deficit, or moisturising and “hardmaxxing” methods, including steroid use, hair transplants, and cosmetic surgery.
This extreme approach to improving physical appearance has been met with a growing wave of stress and hormone-conscious wellness content promoting healthier, non-toxic lifestyles.
Across TikTok and Instagram, young men and women are increasingly documenting activities that prioritise connection, balance, and wellbeing over physical appearance alone.
The wellness 'twist' of low cortisol maxxing
The trend promotes lifestyle habits such as reducing caffeine intake, getting morning sunlight exposure, prioritising rest, and engaging in low-intensity exercise to improve overall well-being.
Popular Instagram reels and TikToks include spending time with friends, making the best out of holidays, investing in romantic relationships and simple leisure activities like fishing with the bros. This trend appears to be especially prominent among men.
Terms such as ‘relationship maxxing’ and ‘fiber maxxing’ are also used several times. Which reflect the shift toward self-improvement through meaningful connections and dietary well-being, offering a positive counterpoint to the detrimental effects associated with “looksmaxxing.” On TikTok, the trend is also centred on reducing chronic stress in an effort to avoid the so-called “cortisol face” – A term used online to describe facial puffiness, bloating, and perceived fat retention linked to prolonged stress.
Cortisol is a natural hormone produced by the body that helps manage metabolism and regulate blood pressure.
‘Low cortisol maxxing’ emphasises stress reduction to enhance aesthetics and overall mental and physical wellbeing. Low cortisol results in reduced stress levels, improved mood and sleep quality.
On the other hand, ‘looksmaxxing’ encompasses a more extreme approach of physical perfection through lifestyle changes, cosmetic enhancements, and body modification, which raises levels of cortisol to an unhealthy extent.
High cortisol levels can lead to a range of health issues, including fatigue, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. It refers to being in stressful or high-pressure situations that trigger a rise in the body’s cortisol levels. On TikTok, the phrase is often used more loosely, with young men and women applying it to everyday experiences linked to relaxation and wellbeing, such as spending time with friends, being with a partner, enjoying good food, or going on holiday as a way to lower their cortisol levels.
The rise of the ‘low cortisol maxxing’ trend highlights a broader shift in online wellness culture, where reducing stress and prioritising emotional balance are increasingly seen as part of self-improvement.
While it sits alongside appearance-focused trends like 'looksmaxxing', it ultimately reflects a growing emphasis on healthier, more sustainable habits, encouraging both men and women to focus less on extreme physical makeovers and more on everyday practices that support mental wellbeing, calmness, and a more balanced lifestyle.
